The word socorro comes from both Portuguese and Spanish, meaning 'aid', by offering help or relief. It is related to the English term succor (or succour). Succour is a primarily British variation of the term succor.

As a noun it would mean assistance that is given in time of distress. It may be used as a synonym for the term relief. The term may also be used to describe a person who affords assistance or relief. As a transitive verb it would mean presenting assistance to in times of distress, want or difficulty. It is a synonym for the word help.

There are also a number of places that go by the name of Socorro such as a Socorro in New Mexico; in Texas; in Brazil; and in São Paulo.
