First you need to unscrew your shower head. It is best to use a wrench for the same. Next carefully remove the rubber gasket that is inside the shower head in order to inspect it. One way to tell for sure that your gasket needs changing is if it leaves a black sticky substance on your hand. Now match the old ring to the new ring in order to select the correct size.
Gently place the ring on the shower head. Use a little pressure for the same and ensure that the ring is in place. The ring should be flat inside the head. Now wrap some of the Teflon tape around the pipe threads (Note that these are not of the shower head but of the pipe). You may need to use two whole wraps of tape and make sure you pull them fairly tight. You must be able to see the thread's ridges but ensure that they are not cutting through the tape. Now test your repair job by turning the shower on. All the best.
