What Does Stepwise Mean?

The word stepwise means something that proceeds in a procedure which comprises a number of steps. It also means bit-by-bit, which is basically one thing at a time. STEP, when written in all capitalised letters, is the name of a web-integrated supplier exchange pilot. The phrases which are closest in meaning to the phrase stepwise are the phrases stepwise regression, stepwise mutation, stepwise dissociation and stepwise refinement.

The phrase stepwise regression is defined as an incremental approach to multiple regression where the order of the entry of the predictor variables is determined statistically. Stepwise mutation is the variation in micro-satellites which appears to result from a slippage in the replication. It is most likely to either add or delete a single repeat unit. As a result of this, alleles which are more similar in size will presumably be more closely related. This additional phylogenetic information can be used to assess the genetic differentiation or genetic distance.

The phrase stepwise dissociation is defined as the assumption that the individual steps in a dissociation reaction can be separated from each other. Stepwise refinement is defined as the development of a program by breaking the original problem down into small sub-problems and then applying the same process to each of them.
