Do Vampire Bats Really Exist?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Vampire bats do not exist in the UK or Europe, but they can be found in Central and South America.
Vampire bats usually do not attack people, but they will prey on birds, but also cattle, horses and pigs.  They do not suck out the blood, but cuts out a tiny piece of skin using its teeth.  It then drinks the blood that seeps from the wound.
The vampire bat is also a pretty efficient blood sucker since its saliva contains an anticoagulant.  This means that the blood will not clot whilst the bat is drinking it.
The vampire bat lives on a diet of blood and is the only mammal to do so, although scientists claim that the vampire bats do not take a great deal of blood from their victims.
However, in terms of livestock, they can be a major nuisance because they can transmit rabies and various other diseases.
