The other person that answered is on the right track. Just as hospitals and doctors offices are cold so are refrigerators cold to reduce the growth of bacteria in our food. Bacteria is unable to grow rapidly at cold temperatures. To further reduce the growth of bacteria it is wise to freeze food.

We refrigerate to combat bacteria, there was a time they said heat was the detroyer of bacteria, they have since found they grow faster in heat and cold is the destroyer.......hospital rooms for the most part are freezing, drs. Offices,so refrigeration is to destroy germs and keep them from multiplying....
