In "Pride and Prejudice," Mr Collins, a cousin of the Bennet family, comes to visit them with the intention of proposing marriage to one of the five girls – he isn't fussy as to which. On hearing that Jane, the eldest (and prettiest) may be engaged already, Mr Collins immediately transfers his attention to Elizabeth, "next in birth and beauty." He proposes to her at the first opportunity, and when she refuses him, assumes that she is just acting coy to ensnare him further. In the end Elizabeth has to ask her father to help convince Mr Collins that she really is in earnest.
She tells the story to her friend Charlotte Lucas, who promptly resolves to marry Mr Collins herself – being poor, plain, and on the shelf (at 28), she sees this as her only chance of a comfortable home. Mr Collins doesn't need much encouragement; within three days of his proposal to Elizabeth, he is engaged to her friend, whom he soon marries.
