Like so many good inventions, the microwave oven was developed from a chance discovery. Back in the 1940s, a man called Percy Spencer was making magnetrons for radar sets, when he noticed that a chocolate bar he had with him melted from the effect of the microwaves. He then went on to experiment with popcorn and eggs (which exploded first time round !). The rest, as they say,is history.
