Most important it would be good to minimise any gas spilled. To do this release the fuel pressure. The best and safest way to do this is very simple: Remove the fuel pump relay or fuse and then try to start the engine. The injectors will try and spray fuel as normal but since the fuel pump will not run all that will happen is that any pressure in the system will force any remaining fuel pressure to go away, the gas will go into the engine, probably burn normally (inside the engine) for a second or so, all will be well and safe.
Now you will be able to remove the filter with out gas under pressure spraying out. Be sure to put the fuse or relay back in when you are done!
