The qualifications necessary for anyone interested in becoming a police officer vary, depending on the specific jurisdiction and country in question. In the United States, a prospective police officer must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application, he/she must have obtained a high school diploma, have a spotless record, a valid driver's license and must have good vision in both eyes.

Upon application, the prospective police officer will have to complete a written examination, a job interview, he/she may also have to pass a polygraph test in certain jurisdictions, such as Kansas, and must also undergo a physical and psychological evaluation.

In the United Kingdom, the requirements are slightly different. For example, in order to apply for the London police force the minimum age is 18.5 years, he/she may not have a tattoo on a visible area of the body (such as on the face, hands or neck) and must have completed a general secondary level education. As in the US, applicants in the UK must undergo both physical and psychological exams during the recruitment process.
