Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the pancreas doesn't secrete sufficient insulin to efficiently use sugars, fats and proteins. Hence the unabsorbed sugar is passed out of urine resulting in frequent dog urination. This condition happens more in middle aged to older dogs although if seen in younger dogs it may be genetic in nature.
Insulin therapy is much more effective than any other to keep the diabetes in check. You may have to administer insulin one to two times a day depending on the dog's conditions. Also the meals should be small, with high fiber content, and taken at fixed intervals. Regular checking of blood sugar levels is a must and may be carried out by way of a glucometer.
Hence, I would strongly suggest that you should not get a dog with diabetes. Diabetes could lead to serious complications and result in disability if not treated properly. Hence if you get a diabetic dog or have one at home it will need a lot of commitment on your part to take care of it. You will have to rigorously look after it and spend hours on a regular basis for its treatment. If you have a job and family to look after this kind of liability will bog you down. If proper treatment is not given, it will start loosing weight, eating more, urinating more, may get bladder infections and develop cataract after a while.
