A listed building references a building that has some kind of special historical, architectural, or cultural significance. There are approximately half a million listed buildings in the UK. Listed buildings are currently divided into three different categories. These are Grade 1, Grade 2*, and Grade 2. Grade 1 buildings are described as buildings of exceptional interest. Grade 2* are buildings that have some particular level of importance and is of special interest. Grade 2 are buildings of special interest. When looking at a building that will be listed, there are several factors that are used for the determination. These factors include architectural interest, historic interest, and historical association to significant people or events. Some buildings may be listed if they are a part of a group of buildings that in their entirety have some significance architecturally or historically. Usually buildings that were built before 1700 and are still in a decent condition are listed. The majority of buildings built between 1700 and 1840 in good condition are listed. Newer buildings go through a more rigorous screening process than these older buildings.
