The word podium is defined as a platform which is small in size and raised. The presenter or the master of ceremonies (which is abbreviated as MC) of a programme stands on the podium and delivers his speech or makes his presentation. The conductor of an orchestra, who stands in front of the musicians in an orchestra and wields the baton, and a speaker who is about to deliver a speech also stand on a raised platform, which is known as a podium.
Podiums were a feature of temples during the time of the Roman Empire in ancient times. These ancient Roman temples were often raised up on high masonry bases. The high masonry bases on which these ancient Roman temples were raised were called podiums. In architecture, a podium is defined as a continued pedestal which either supports a row of columns or serves for a parapet or forms a terrace of sorts.
