There are several ways of beginning a career as a stylist. It is first necessary in the UK to gain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Hairdressing, starting with Level One, which focuses on introducing the trainee to basic skills. The student then moves on to Level 2, which covers standard competency as a barber or stylist, such as blow drying, perming and colouring. During the first two stages you can also work as a trainee in a salon, although responsibilities will be limited. This can be undertaken from the age of sixteen. Once Level 2 has been completed, you are qualified to work as a hairdresser and stylist in a professional salon. You can also progress to Level Three of the NVQ, which includes training for senior hairdressers, and also covers financial management and supervision. Beginning stylists and hairdressers can expect to earn around £1,000 a month after qualifying, which can rise to an annual salary of £25,000 and more for senior stylists.
