Solway is supposedly derived from two Norse words namely Sul which means pillar and Vath which means ford.
Solway Firth is the name of a firth that forms a part of the border between Scotland and England. It is located between Galloway and Dumfries and Cumbria. It is also comprises a part of the adjoining Irish Sea.
The coastland is full of lowland hills and lofty mountains. Many regard the coastline as the most scenic coastline in all of the British Isles. The adjoining areas are largely rural where the traditional occupations of fishing and hill farming still prevail. Tourism in this region has been steadily increasing. Movie lovers will be interested to know that the horror flick Wicker Man was filmed in this area.
Solway Moss is the name of a lowland peat bog or rather moss located in Cumbria in England very close to the border of Scotland. Since 2005 many organizations like the Friends of the Earth for example have been actively campaigning for this moss to be declared a Special Area of Conservation. This will always remain in history records as the site of the Battle of Solway moss.
