    There are several places and buildings on earth with the name of San Giovanni and most of them are situated in Italy. One of the villages in San Marino is named as San Giovanni. This name is also a part of the name of several churches. Some of them are Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, the Baptistry of San Giovanni in Florence, San Giovanni in Siena, San Giovanni de Butris in Umbria and San Giovanni di Dio in Florence.

    The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is a cathedral Church in Rome and also serves as the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope. Among the four major Basilicas of Rome it is ranked as the first and also has the title of 'Ecumenical Mother Church' among the Roman Catholics.

    The site where the Basilica situated now was under the occupation of the Roman Empire and located near the palace of gens Laterani who worked as administrators to many emperors.
