In short story writing writers are always encouraged to start when the kettle is boiling. This means grabbing the reader's attention by starting right as the main action of the story is kicking off and not meandering up to the starting post with lots of background. It is a vital rule in short story writing because there is not a lot of space to grow a story but it also applies to other forms such as film and TV. While readers of novels might be prepared to give a book an opportunity to grow on them it is increasingly felt that screen drama must grab the audience's attention right from the start. With TV in particular it is too easy to switch channel if the start of a drama is too slow or dull. So, if the story is a romance the writer is urged to bring the potential lovers together quickly. If it is a crime story than have the criminal act take place right at the start.
