Answer Question

Biologist estimate there are fewer than 2,000 wild Asian elephants left in Thailand.
Deforestation has destroyed the animals' preferred river-valley grassland and forest habitats, forcing them into isolated upland pockets.
A ban on commercial forest logging instituted in 1989 has relieved the elephants' plight somewhat, but the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre estimates that in 20 years, elephants may become extinct.
Khao Yai National Park, approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, fosters one of the last remaining herds -- of 200  members -- of wild elephants.  However, the number is too small to ensure genetic diversity so the herd is doomed to die off.
Park rangers offer night tours to spot wildlife, so you could be lucky enough to see an elephant. On a hike in November 2006 near the park headquarters, I saw elephant  tracks and dung -- but no animals proper.
