Which Snakes Are Covered In Warts?

Some species of snake don't have ordinary scales that overlap. The Asian wart snakes of India, south east Asia, New Guinea and Australia have scales that lie next to each other and each have a sharp ridge. This gives their skin a very rough warty appearance, hence their name.

The heads of wart snakes are very broad and flat and they have thick and stumpy bodies. They do have slender tails and these act as a rudder when the snakes are swimming. The tails are unusual in that they are prehensile and they can grasp objects quite firmly. The wart snakes make use of this ability by grabbing onto the sea or river bed to anchor themselves against the currents when necessary.

The snakes are also unusual in that they can open their mouths underwater and swallow fish, without getting air in their breathing system. One species even eats crabs underwater.
