Islam is basically a religion of peace. Muslims who are the believers of Islam are monotheistic which means that they Agree and pray to only one God. Muslims as a fact also believe on the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) as the last Prophet send by Allah and as the sole preacher of the teachings of Islam. Anyone who believes on these two things is considered as a Muslim.

However, in order to be recognized as a Muslim one must follow the teachings of Allah which were sent through His holy book Quran and his Prophet (S.A.W). A Muslim must also pray five times daily in the form of Salah, must pay alms to the poor according to his income, must perform Hajj (visit to the Holy Kabbah) once in his lifetime (if allowed by his financial circumstances), and also must fast during the month of Ramadan. Another aspect in this regard is a believer of Shahadah which means that a Muslim must testify that there is no God except Allah and Muhammad (S.A.W) is the prophet of Allah.

There are many websites that allow lots and lots of information on Islam. However, I would recommend you to read Quran as much as possible with translation if Arabic is not your native language. Apart from that go through the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad which will give you a lot of insight into the actual teachings of Islam and how to follow them.
