How Battles Were Fought In World War One?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

WW One was fought like most 20th Century battles. The main difference was that both sides did not like getting out of the trenches to get their heads blown off. Tanks, airplanes, long range cannon (howitzers), longer range rail cannon, gas, and any thing else either side could think of was used to get the men out of those trenches and fight. General Pershing was so appalled at seeing the carnage in the trenches that he refused to send American Troops in them. He forced the troops to fight above ground and disarm the machine gun trenches before attacking enemy defenses. This novel idea worked so well that it took America two years to do what England and France tried to do in 4 years of combat. Because of TRENCH WARFARE, World War I was called the "War of Attrition", meaning both sides were going to "slug it out" until one side lost all their soldiers.
