What Demands Were The Iranians Making From Jimmy Carter's Government In Exchanger For The Hostages?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Iranians believed, to a great extent justifiably, that their revolution could be jeopardized by interference from the Americans through their embassy. The most likely scenario was the backing of one of the senior Army Commanders and seizing power. The Ayatollah went as far as to call the American Embassy a Den of Spies. When the students seized the embassy and took the staff and military personal hostage they demanded the return of the Shah in exchange for the hostages. They wanted him to be tried for crimes against the Iranian people. They wanted repatriation of Iranian assets in the United States which amounted to approximately $8 billion officially at that time. They wanted an apology and a promise that the United States would not in any way interfere in Iranian internal affairs.
