    The term maize derives from the Spanish form (maíz) of the indigenous Taino term for the plant. The usual term for maize is corn, which originally referred to any grain, but which now refers exclusively to maize.
    Maize's scientific name is "Zea mays" and they belong to Kingdom Plantae, Maize is classified among Angiosperms or Flowering Plants. They are Monocots i.e., have one cotyledon (seed-leaf) and are thus Commelinids. Other scientific classifications of Maize are:

    Family: Poaceae
    Genus: Zea
    Species: Z. Mays
    Division: Magnoliophyta
    Class: Liliopsida.
