Boiling and distillation are two very different procedures and used for different reasons.

The purpose of distillation is to remove impurities such as heavy metals. Boiling is used to kill bacteria that may result in unsafe drinking water.

Distilled water is recovered during boiling by the rising steam hitting a cooler plate or passing through a tube and cooling leaving the minerals behind in the boiling pot. The collective water is then captured in another vessel.
