What Are The Health Concerns EDNOS Poses?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The threat from EDNOS is not limited just because the person does not manifest all the symptoms associated with an eating disorder. EDNOS poses as grave a health risk as any of the other eating disorders.

EDNOS can also wreak havoc on the mind, besides the physical damage it can do. A person with EDNOS would not manifest all the signs of any of the recognized eating disorders, and this is something that can play heavily on the mind.

For instance, if a woman were to display most of the symptoms associated with anorexia, such as severely limited food intake, drastic reduction in body weight, and other such typical symptoms, but not the most important one of them all – disruption of the menstrual cycle, she could very easily be confused as to what was happening to her body. Besides, it can also catch friends and relatives unawares. For all intents and purposes, to them it would seem as if the woman was having a very successful dieting regimen, and not a potentially fatal disease.

What makes EDNOS more dangerous than the others is that while the physical manifestations may be limited or even non-existent, the internal damage is the same as that caused by anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Health risks include kidney problems, reduced growth, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc
