Is Vodka Really Made From Potatoes?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

No. Vodka is not traditionally made from potatoes. The traditional raw material for vodka is rye. However, potatoes, wheat, corn, or molasses may also be distilled. After all, with vodka it is not a question of retaining any of the taste of the original substances, because as much as possible is removed by the filtration. A good vodka is distinguished by a neutral taste. But the original source does still have an influence on the consistency. Vodka from rye is the most popular, generally regarded as being particularly rounded, smooth, and mellow. Potato vodka taste more distinctive than grain vodka. Molasses, which retains a sweetish taste, is in many respects the cheapest source.

In conclusion, vodka can be made from potatoes, but traditionally, it is made from rye. The potato vodka is not as strong and has a very distinctive taste. The best vodkas are made from rye and molasses.

Trust me on this Dog, it is often made from potatoes. The strength is a result of the distillation - it can be made 190 proof if you desire.

Vodka is one of the world's most consumed distilled beverages. Typically it is colourless liquid contain ethanol purified by distillation from a fermented substance such as grain or potatoes. Except for various types of flavourings ,vodka consists of water and alcohol(ethanol) its usually has 35% to 50% of alcohol range by volume Absolute Vodka, however, is made solely from grain, which more than 400 years of tradition has proven to produce the best and purest vodka possible. Absolute Vodka uses a special method of distillation that retains a smooth grain character and is extremely low in unwanted by-products.
Vodka was produced through the process of fermentation….how? That is a few thousand years ago; someone made the bright discovery that when deprived of oxygen, the yeast cell turns sugar into carbon dioxide and ethanol. Fermented beverages are born. These beverages were eventually distilled, giving us dozens of different spirits, one of which is vodka.
Then the distillation process ……Turning the fermented grain mash to vodka takes distillation. The principle has remained unchanged ever since it was accidentally discovered over a thousand years ago.
There are two kinds of distillation: batch distillation and continuous distillation. Batch distillation is an age-old method used for many types of spirits. Refined to a high degree of sophistication, this method is still used in areas like Cognac and the Scottish highlands to make cognac and whiskey. Continuous distillation turns the 8% fermented mash into crude spirit with an alcohol concentration by volume of 85-90%
Lastly….The last step is rectification, a method of removing unwanted by-products introduced over a century ago by the man on the bottle's medallion One column extracts unpleasant tasting solvent compounds; another removes fused oil; a third methanol; a fourth concentrates the spirit - 96% pure alcohol by volume and extremely low in impurities.
And there your vodka is ready of course made of grains. Raw potatoes and several other organic materials.

Yes, traditionally, Vodka was always made from potatoes, and then flavoured with fruits or other flavourings. But these days, a lot of vodka is made from Grain, not potatoes. But the apple part is a flavouring, not really a raw material for the Vodka.
