      is the answer, but it is erroneous to think of this as the subwoofer. The LFE is specifically for special effects, not the subharmonic frequencies in general. Your audio teacher is misleading you with this question.

      For a killer surround system, use a dedicated subwoofer unit for the LFE, and another for the sub freqs in your front speakers. I once had an LFE sub under my couch and a front mix sub in a corner of my living room; talk about a rush during Die Hard movies.
