    William Webb Ellis is credited with starting the game at Rugby School by picking up the ball and running with it in his hands.  There is a rugby cup named after him - the William Webb Ellis cup.

    Webb Ellis was born 24 November 1806 and died 24 January 1872.  Webb Ellis became a clergyman.  His grave is in the Old English Churchyard at Menton in France and from it you can see the Mediterranean.
