What Does Secondary Amputation Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is a term for an amputation for injury. A secondary amputation is carried out after the basic effects of the injury have subsided. It is a term that is used in the medical terminology. A secondary amputation is performed only if an injury does not cure properly after a previous amputation. Thus when an injury does not heal satisfactorily even after an amputation then there is a need for another one to redeem the situation and cure the injury.

It is done at least after a gap of 48 hrs since the first amputation. It is done only as an extreme step and when there is no other alternative. It is a step taken to save the life or the other parts of the body from being affected and create more problems. Secondary opinions are sought and expert analysis is done before implementing such a step because maximum effort is taken to find out if there is an alternative to it.

I would suggest the alternative would be post diabetic foot treatment for a given window of time as established by a doctor (podiatrist). but Medicare will not pay for any post diabetic foot treatment by a recognized doctor of podiatry. Medicare will pay $30,000 for amputation sure sounds like a hell of a way to run a railroad.
