What Do Cyanobacteria Mean?

Cyanobacteria refer to a group of prokaryotic organisms. Cyanobacteria are not organised chloroplasts, but they use chlorophyll to prepare their food. They prepare their food by the method of photosynthesis from which oxygen is produced and evolved. It is capable of fixing nitrogen in a heterocyst. It occurs mostly in lichens. The cyanobacteria present in lichens act as both primary photobionts as well as internal and external cephalodia. It is commonly known as blue-green algae.

It lives predominantly in its natural habitat, namely in damp soils, on the surface of rocks or in fresh or salt water. It performs photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants prepare their own food using sunlight, energy, water and carbon dioxide. This is converted into oxygen (which is exhaled by the plants) and carbohydrates (the common type of which are sugars). It is one of the oldest groups of bacteria on Earth. It was one of the first-known organisms on the Earth to produce oxygen.
