When Was Macclesfield Town Football Club Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A football club from Macclesfield has been in existence since the mid 1800s, however the team played under rugby rules. In 1874 the club opted to play under the rules of the Football Association, so this is the year when the club is considered to have been formed.

In the club's early years it was known as a range of different names including Hallifield FC, Macclesfield FC and Macclesfield Football & Athletic Club. It wasn't until after the Second World War had ended that the club became Macclesfield Town Football Club.

Macclesfield started playing their home games at the grounds of Rostrons Field and Victoria Road, but moved to Moss Rose in 1891. They have played there ever since. The stadium has a capacity for over 6,300 spectators.

Macclesfield Town currently play in the League Two division. In the 2005/06 campaign, the club finished in 17th position in the table.
