Answer Question

Whether you need a trading licence or not is dependent on what kind of business you are setting up and in which jurisdiction.

If your proposed business is, say, a taxi cab company or a hot food retail outlet, the answer is yes.

Trading licences are generally issued by your local authority, so check with them about whether trading licence conditions apply to your proposed business. The best department to try first is their Trading Standards section, they will be able to advise you of any legal requirements that may be in force for your business type.

Another port of call should be your local enterprise company or business development agency, they will be able to assist you with all aspects of business start up and may also be able to offer some funding as well. Call them for an appointment and go prepared with a business plan if at all possible.

Don't say, "What funding can I get?" Pitch it along the lines of  how they may be able to assist you realise your business objectives. You'll get a much better reception that way.
