Why Are People In Favour Of Embryo Research?

Supporters of an extension to research carried out on human embryos believe that it would help scientists find cures for a range of diseases which cripple many millions of people across the globe. Researchers believe that the results of experimentation on cells could revolutionise the treatment of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Also, it may be possible in the future to clone livers and kidneys to cure those with failures in the organs of the body. Down's syndrome, Tay-Sachs disease, leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, cancer and spinal cord injury could also be cured as a result of human cloning, it is claimed.

Some Christians justify the healing of diseases by these means. They argue that Jesus healed many individuals of a variety of diseases according to the four Gospels, such as the woman with the haemorrhage and the lepers. Therefore, they may argue that embryo research should take place to provide healing for individuals with incurable diseases.
