When Was The First Gulf War?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first Gulf War took place in 1990-1991.  It started on 2nd August 1990 (the date of the Iraqi invasion) and finished on the 3rd of March 1991.  The conflict arose ostensibly because Iraq invaded Kuwait.  At midnight on August 2nd, some 150,000 Iraqi troops poured into Kuwait, vastly outnumbering the 20,000 army of Kuwait.
Four days after this the United Nations placed an economic embargo on Iraq.  Things rumbled on for another few months.  Then on 29 November the UN issued an ultimatum to Iraq that they must leave Kuwait by the 15th of January 1991.  This did not happen.  Then 100,000 sorties took place against Iraqi targets.  Still nothing happened.  So on the 24th February the coalition invaded south west Iraq.
By the 24th of February the Iraqi forces had all but collapsed and by the 28th a ceasefire was agreed.  On the 3rd of March the Iraqis accepted the conflict was over and ceasefire conditions.
