    Their mommies' tummies.

That's the classic answer to this when I was a little kid (you can tell I'm a Yank).

Well most of them were born on American soil, so they originate from there as much as anywhere, too.

If you want to know what ethnic origin most of them are... that's a bit tricky because ethnicity is self-identified; you can have people who call themselves "Italian" even though it's 4 generations and lots of inter-marrying with girls with Anglo-Saxon names since then -- but they might still tell you "I'm Italian".

If you go on surnames, the break down is about 40% British names, about 40% German names, about 20% other.

If you go on regions, most white people have mostly German and English ancestry, with a hefty dose of Scotch and Irish in there, too. Most "black" Americans have a heavy ancestry of West Africans and native Americans: the average African-American is about 25% native American. Plus lots else.

About 74% of Americans are white, therefore most Americans are of predominantly European ethnic origin. Some of these are Hispanic, so may have a bit more native American heritage than on average for white Americans.

African-Americans make up about 13% of the US population.

Most Americans living today were born either on the East Coast or West coast of the country.
