When Was Disraeli Prime Minister?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Benjamin Disraeli (the first Earl of Beaconsfield) was the prime minister of the United Kingdom for two terms. His first term as the British prime minister was from February 27, 1868 to December 1, 1868. His second term was from February 20, 1874 to April 21, 1880. Disraeli, a descendant of Italian Sephardic Jews (his original family name was D'Israeli) was born on December 1, 1804 and died on April 19, 1881 after a three-decade long career as a statesman and writer.

He is the first and only person of Jewish parentage so far to serve two terms as the prime minister of Britain. He was the founder of the modern-day Conservative party. He set up the Conservative party following his constant differences of opinion with the leader of the original party, Lord Derby, and the split of the Conservatives into factions after the controversial Corn Laws schism in 1844. He enjoyed the support and confidence of Queen Victoria, with whom he had a good rapport and a warm friendship.
