What Ungulates Am I Likely To See In Northern Botswana?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The swamp-and grasslands of northern Botswana, the Caprivi Strip
bordering Angola, Chobe National Park, and the Okavango Delta are
teeming with a variety of grazing animals.

Burchell's Zebra herds are common. Giraffe and their gangly young are
seen browsing in treetops or awkwardly lowering themselves to drink.
Cape buffalo herds are seen with cattle egrets riding on their backs,
    picking off parasites.

Impala are the most common of the grassland browsers, while sable
antelopes, with their long, swept-back horns are uncommon. Bushbucks,
steenboks, and the tiny duiker are most active at dawn or dusk.

Wildebeests, or gnus, with their long beards and tsessebes with their
characteristic sloping backs are the largest antelopes.

The region has several, uniquely adapted swamp ungulates. The
sitatunga has a striped neck and lyre-shaped horns. The red lechwe
has large, splayed hooves to better negotiate marshy ground. The
common waterbuck emits a powerful musk smell, and has a white ring on
its rump. Its hindquarters are higher and more powerful than its
front legs to allow it to take off quickly from water.

Elephants, while not actually ungulates, are very common herbivores
in the region. It is a guarantee that you will see mothers with
    cunningly cute calves.
