Hostile is an adjective form of the noun "hostility." The verb "to be hostile" means "to be unfriendly" or "to be unreceptive to someone or something." When we say that a particular person is hostile to someone, it means that person is unfriendly and nurses hatred against that person. A hostile attitude can represent "an argumentative attitude or an aggressive attitude. If the environment is hostile, it means that the setting is not conducive to survival, growth or development.

A hostile country can imply a nation which is at ill-will or in opposition to the other. Hostility can also mean something not beneficial to the health or wellbeing of a person, for example: a hostile weather. When we say that a particular witness has turned "hostile," it means that the person has deviated in the court of law in the presence of the judge, contradictory to what he was supposed to say.
