Eliot began her writing career in 1846 with an anonymous translation of Strauss' "Life of Jesus." In 1854, while working for the Westminster Review, she published another translation, this time of Feuerbach's "Essence of Christianity." in 1857 she published the first of a series of sketches which became known as "Scenes of Clerical Life." In 1879 she produced a collection of essays called "The Impressions of Theophrastus Such" written from the viewpoint of a clergyman's son, and reflecting on contemporary life and events.
Eliot also wrote a good deal of poetry. While not well known today, they were well received at the time; in particular her 1867 poem "O may I join the choir invisible." Best remembered today is an 1869 sonnet sequence, "Brother and Sister" in which she recalls a happy childhood with her beloved brother, before they became estranged. In addition, Eliot was a prolific letter-writer and diarist; her letters and diaries were published in 9 volumes from 1954-78.
