The sarsen stones are a type of sandstone which is harder than granite. They weigh approximately around 25 to 50 tons each. These heavy stones were first found in a place called Marlborough Downs near Avebury in North Wiltshire. Stonehenge is built of sarsen stones.

The Heel Stone which weigh several tones is made of sarsen stone. The Heel Stone is 16 feet tall. Stonehenge III the most beautiful of all these constructions was also made up of sarsen stones. The Stonehenge III period took up the maximum amount of man power as well as sarsen stones. The Trilithon Horseshoe and Sarsen Circle was also made up of, well, sarsen.

Some of the stones are Bluestones from the Preselli Mountains of Wales.
It is thought that the builders of  this phase of Stonehenge's development had contacts with Wales and chose the stones for there colour and perhaps symbolic properties,

The removal of the Blue Stones must have involved a huge amount of labour and manhours.

It was thought that the stones were tranported to Witshire by glacial action but this theory is being debated.

The properties of different stone was obviously important to the builders.
