Proxy is a noun which has come to mean a person who is authorized to act on behalf of another. In this sense of the term it could mean an agent or substitute. It could also simply refer to the authority to act on behalf of another. It may mean the written authorization allowing one to act in the stead of another.

The term has its roots in the Middle English proccy, which is a contraction of the earlier term procracie, meaning annual payment to a prelate; it comes from the Anglo-Norman term procuracie; coming from the Medieval Latin term procuratia, which is an alteration of the Latin procuratio; from the term procuratus, a past participle of the term procurare, meaning to take care of.
