The exact meaning of the name Malawi is disputed. Some feel that it probably means flames. Others are equally certain that it means 'the glitter of the sun as it rises across the lake'. The Republic of Malawi is situated in south-eastern Africa. It was formerly known as Nyasaland.

Malawi lies south of Tanzania, south east of Zambia and Mozambique encircles it on the south, east and west.

It is a democratic nation. Its capital is Lilongwe where its Parliament and government ministries are situated. Lilongwe's inhabitants number approximately 400,000 people.

Malawi has the Great Rift Valley running right across it from north to the south. In this great valley lies Lake Nyasa or as it is now known Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi is the third biggest lake in Africa. Malawi is also home to the Shire Highlands and the Nyika Uplands.
