What Is The History Of Didcot Town?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The town of the Didcot dates back to the iron age. Originally, the settlement was situated on the ridge in the town. The surrounding area was marshland, which the Romans attempted to drain by building a ditch which runs north through the Ladygrove area, which is north of the town near Long Wittingham.

Didcot was originally called Dudcotte and appeared under this name on historical records in the 1200s.

Back then, Didcot was a sleepy rural Berkshire village with a population of just 100. For hundreds of years it stayed this way, and only occasionally popped up in records.

The parish church in Didcot still stands today, along with some houses and streets of the old village. Shards of pottery have been found along with a coffin, coins and a bronze broach in a field that lies immediately east of the church. The pottery suggests an existence to the second and third centuries.
