The Regions of Italy were essentially granted a certain measure of regional autonomy as per the 1948 constitution. However, specific five regions (that is, Friuli-Venezia Giulia in addition to Sardinia, Sicily and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, as well as the Aosta Valley) in particular have been awarded a special status of autonomy so to establish their very own regional legislation with regards to explicit local matters.
The remaining 15 ordinary regions were in effect set up just in the early 1970s. These regions have often been brought into politics of Italy.
For instance, in the year 2005 the prominent centre-right government under Silvio Berlusconi brought forth the proposal for important reform of the constitution. This would have implied significantly escalating the powers given to the regions in key areas like health and education. However in June of the year 2006, the proposals, were ultimately rejected in a referendum.
