How Can I Quit Smoking?

Answer Question

14 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There is no set formula with which a smoker can quit smoking. Most smokers have tried to quit the cancer stick hundreds of time but the urges become irresistible after a while.

It'll be easier to quit smoking if the smoker gives up or reduces his intake of alcohol and caffeine as they increase the cravings for a cigarette. Old habits need to be broken; most smokers like to smoke after a meal. The cigarette could be replaced with candy or mint.

A lot of fluids should be consumed. A nicotine patch will regulate the amount of nicotine that gets into the blood stream and this will eliminate the cravings for sometime. But nicotine patches do not have a high success rate over a long period of time. Hitting the gym will definitely help as exercising releases certain chemicals in the body and that could substitute the effects of a cigarette to a certain extent.

Hi, I am happy to say I stopped smoking twelve years ago.  My family worried me to death.  I had developed a smoker's cough.  I was so tried of them trying to run my life, so I was determined not to quit.  So at first I stopped on my own for about five months, something sad happened in my life so I started smoking again.  One day I said to myself I am tried of people making rude remarks, and I must be honest I was really tried of smoking.  I had been smoking for almost thirty years.  So I went to a hypnotist and I tell you it was the best money I have ever spent.  I stop smoking that same day, I have not wanted a cigarette since.  Maybe it will work for you too.  Take care!

Smoking is a very addictive habit; however every one including people who smoke know that smoking kills, slowly but surely. So quit while you still can. To get rid of your habit of smoking, you can visit rehabilitation centres, or take some consulting which might be useful. You can do something constructive every time you feel the need to smoke; instead of smoking a cigarette you can play with your kids (if you have) you can go for some out door activities. Indulge yourself in some physical games, something that will keep your mind of smokes.

Smoking Kills! And it's true. To stop smoking you need to develop a strong will power as smoking is addictive. To stop smoking you need to cut down on your intake generally very slowly if you are used to smoking a pack of cigarettes in a single day, then you need to cut down yourself to half a pack, once you have done this, cut your intake to 5 cigarettes.

After a while you can cut it down to 3 then 2 then 1…once you are used to taking one cigarette a day you can easily resist and go on without smoking even once in a day. If you feel the urge to get a smoke, convince yourself in to saying "I don't need this" instead of going and having a smoke indulge yourself in something creative which will keep your thoughts of cigarettes. Spend some quality time with your family which will help you in keeping your mind of the smokes.

If everything fails then you seriously need to enter a Rehabilitation centre.

I gave up smoking 13 years ago after 25 years. I was on 50-60 a day for most of that time. If you truly want to give up (for your own sake not because someone else is pressuring you) then you will. In my own case, I found it unhelpful to think in terms of never having another cigarette. I felt more in conreol if I thought to myself 'I can have a cigarette if I want, but I choose not to have one right now'. It's a cliche I know, but one day at a time is the secret. Remember - it may be hell at first, but it won't be hell forever. If you can get past the first month I think you'll find you won't want to throw all that good work away. You also have youth on your side which is the best time to quit.

Very best of luck. Shout me if you want any more advice.

I quite a year ago. I prayed for help. In addition I took the following steps: #1 you must want to really quit or you wont. #2 I cut back little by little for about 3 months. #3 This can be the most important one DO NOT TELL ANYONE, because the first question they want to ask you is, "how the quitting smoking thing going?" and the last thing you need after convincing yourself for 2 hours not to smoke is someone reminding you about it. #4Just b/c you have one 2 months later doesn't mean that you failed as long as it is just one. I needed the reminder of it about 2 months after I had quit and it tasted horrible I was so glad I did that. Oh, and at some points I would hold my hand up to my mouth like I was smoking and inhale deep just to over come the urge. My husband still smoked around me. Sometimes I would just inhale the second hand smoke (now it is nasty to me) And you need to realize if you seek here and there you are only hurting yourself.   If you are a Christian you must realize that your flesh wants the cig. Not your spirit. Your flesh wants what is bad your spirit does not.(that helped me too it might sound weird to you)    p. S. My husband is currently on chantix and it is workingokay for him so far. Cost 120 a month)

What I did, I chain smoked Marlboro Reds until it made me so sick I threw up.  I smoked about 2 packs in an hour and a half.  Haven't had a craving since, that was about 7 months ago.

You as the individual has to decide that is what you want to do.  I have co-workers that went "cold turkey" to quit smoking and now that chew lots of gum!  They have agreed that they feel much better now that they have quit.  When asked what made them do it, their reply was their family had tried for years to get them to quit smoking but the bottom line was until they made the decision themselves, it was not going to happen.  They decided they wanted to see their children grow up and be there for their family.

            There are two factors that will determine your success in  quit smoking for good. They are;
            •    Will – You must have the desire to give up your habit of smoking and create a strong will to avoid a smoking relapse.
            • Mindset – You must learn about the effects of smoking, understand
its consequences and face the fact that you need to stop smoking and
follow, finish and maintain a quit smoking plan.
