Uterine fibroid usually are removed surgically. But for women who wish to maintain their fertility, a procedure called fibroid embolization is used in which artery which supplies blood to the fibroids is blocked by mixture of x-ray and plastic particles. This is 40 minutes to 3 hours procedure performed by radiologist.
After the procedure patient can feel sever cramps for 24 hours, nausea and vomiting, vaginal bleeding, fever, pain, fatigue and sometimes infection. Complete recovery can take 1-2 weeks.
Relapse of fibroids is common after this procedure but can take 5-10 years. Sometimes, (less than 5%) this procedure unable to give results and hysterectomy is recommended.
