An adult who is healthy will have the reading of ALC of 1,300 - 4,000 of blood per micro-litre. Anything over that indicates that something is not as it should be.

An infection can cause a high Absolute Lymphocyte count.  The white cells in your blood are called Lymphocytes and they help to fight infections. They can become high for many reasons. A typical cold virus right to much more serious one that is long term such as CMV or Mono.

Meningitis at its start and other infections caused by bacteria can also cause your Absolute Lymphocyte count to be high. HIV will bring this count up very fast at the beginning and then end up falling far too low afterward.

An exceedingly high count may possibly mean that your bone marrow is making too many. This happens with leukemia and lymphoma. Multiple tests should generally be done rather than alone. The other factors that can cause a high count are as follows:

Pertussis, which is an acute infection/
Infections such as American trypanosomiasis, also known as Chagas disease and toxoplasmosis.
Hepatitis.
Cytomegalovirus infection.
Brucellosis or tuberculosis.

In children who are under two, there could be a viral infection that is acute and causing relative lymphocytosis, thyrotoxicosis, connective tissue disease, splenomegaly and Addison’s disease.

If you do have a high Lymphocyte count, the multiple tests that your doctor orders for you will pinpoint what is causing it and he will then go from there with whatever treatment is necessary.

As a 53 year old CLL patient of 5 years...my last count jumped my lymphocytes from 74% to 85% of my wbc in the last 6 months.  Is this a significant jump?  Up to now my lymphocyte percentage has steadily maintained at 73 to 74 %, so this is alarming for me.  Any comments?

Not a lot by itself.  Many things can "fill out the picture".  Fevers? How long? Are Hemoglobin and platelets low or high?  Infectious exposures?  Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell which fight infection.  They go up for a wide variety of reasons, everything from typical "cold" viruses, to more serious long-term viruses like Mono and CMV.  They also go up at the start of some bacterial infections like meningitis.  They go up fast during initial infection with HIV, then fall, eventually too low.  Extremely high lymphocytes can mean the bone marrow is producing too many like in luekemias and lymphomas.  So, generally no test should be looked at alone, but in the context of the overall picture and time course.

Hope you are well.
