What Is A Blog Widget?

I am building a new blog and my friend suggested I start using widgets. When asked what they were, he didn't know what they were, but knew they were cool and easy to use. So what's a widget and how does it work?

Widgets are useful software applications that allow you to add functionality to your blog or website. An excellent example is dukabuzz from Jaduka Labs, a free widget which allows blog readers to easily record audio comments to a blog using their regular telephone. This Web 2.0 telephony widget allows a blog owner to receive, moderate and publish the comments that visitors can then click and listen to, adding a very cool interactive element to a web blog or site that can be used for not only comments, but polling, voting and good old fashioned debate! Would be a great tool for radio and TV stations sites as well.

The best way to describe a widget is to call it a building module. I use Word Press so my answer is going to be biased that way. The widget lets you add a piece of code or java script into a block that can be easily moved around on your blog. If you don't like it at the top of the side bar you can easily relocate it by moving the entire widget. Other wise you would have to go into the "themes" section and edit the html code of the page itself.
