Aston Villa FC was formed in March 1874 in the area of Aston in Birmingham. It is one of the twelve original clubs that formed the Football League.
As was popular with many cricket teams towards the end of the 19th century, the Aston Villa Cricket Club decided to play football during the winter months to keep up their physical fitness levels so that they would be ready to return to cricket the following year.
A very strange fact about Aston Villa's first game, is that they played against Aston Brook St Mary's Rugby side and played the first half of the game under rugby rules and the second half under football rules. Villa won the bizarre game by 1-0, which they scored in the 'football' half of the game.
