Who Was Chet Atkins?

    Chet Atkins was a country singer who was a very talented guitar player. He was born on June 29, 1924 in Luttrell, Tennessee in the United States. He passed away on June 30, 2001 from complications related to cancer.

    As a young man he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and began to prove his guitar playing ability was superior. He recorded his first album in 1953 and it was titled 'Chet Atkins - Gallopin Guitar'. His career took off from that album and his popularity grew quickly. He became known as "Mr. Guitar" because of his extraordinary skills.

    Later in his musical career, he was hired by RCA records to produce and promote other country music singers.  While at RCA, he became famous for creating a different country style that he called "The Nashville Sound". He is best known as the creator of the "Nashville Sound".

    In 1973, he was inducted into the country music hall of fame.
