My Puppy Is Pottie Trained, But Now I Would Like For Him To Go On A Puppy Pad Or Papers?

I have pottie trained my puppy to go outside, and we've done such a good job that I can't get him to go on a pad or paper. I brought him to a place where the dog uses a pad and he even peed on it! Not at home, he will just stand by the door until I take him out. I just want him to be able to relieve himself when I am away and know that it's ok for him to do so. He's 7mo Boston Terrier, such a good boy.

Everytime your pup indicates that he needs to go outside for the toilet, place him on the pad or newspaper. If he does go on the pad, reward him with a treat and a pat. It will take a while but it will happen.

Yes, I have done that a bit, I just need to be more persuasive or patient. I just can't get him to go on it. He peed on my mom's dog pad, it had been wet on by her dog already though. I will keep trying. I just hate to think that if he is alone for longer than a few hours he will be suffering tring to hold it.

An adult dog is capable and not miserable to wait to potty a normal work day. If you are leaving him alone longer than that, perhaps you need a sitter or neighbor to stop in. You are not doing him a favor. If he becomes trained to the pads, he may go ahead and urinate on the floor where there is a prior accident from long ago. You may reverse your training and never get it back. If you are absolutely set on doing it, you might try placing the pad outside where he normally urinates. When you see him start to urinate, place him on the pad and give him a treat. Once he learns to use it, place it inside. One of my neighbors dogs is pad trained. The pads have urine smell in them which encourages the pet to use them. She brought him over and he promptly peed on my carpet. I have no doubt there still was a little odor from dog training 1 1/2 years ago. You may be opening a can of worms.

In my opinion if you were to take your puppy outside every 2 to 3 hours your puppy will not become confused. You succeeded in pottie training which is very hard. Why would you want to teach your puppy to go inside the house?

I would want him to go on a pad or newspaper because in the near future I will not be home full time and I want him to know that it is ok for him to relieve himself somewhere besides outside. He currently goes out very often, I tried holding back on that for a day and I felt too bad I couldn't make him wait.
